The black background was created by using a flash on the subjects thus throwing most of the background into darkness. I increased the blacks with selective colors in PS further throwing almost everything into black and then cloned out the remnants to get the complete black BG.

I really like the concept but I'm not sure whether I exactly like it. It's a great image don't get me wrong - I like how you have put it together and how you've chosen to place it all. Just something seems to be missing to make this better?. Either that or something needs changing.
It could almost pass as a painting.
