It was mentioned in the "Make A Change" contest that I consider doing a portrait as it would be a different subject than my usual nature photos.
I imagine this would not qualify!!!

A super macro!

Great little fellow!

From a regular portrait standpoint I wish you had the focus on the eyes.
At least the right one looks a bit blurred on my monitor.

Knowing the challenges with this technique it is still cool as mentioned before.

Could you not get that little annoying piece of weed (lower left) away from "it" before taking the photograph? :p

It's pretty cool that you could get so close to a turtle Gary. Colors and patterns are wonderful. I agree with Patrick about the blurred right eye. I imagine this was your narrowest available aperture? I'm sure that piece of vegetation would be very difficult to heal but it is distracting.

Good shot!

Thanks people!!
The slightly blurred eye, yes. In defense of the overall focus, the Raynox lens used in this shot has an extremely small DOF, probably in millimeters, which I've found really needs a non-moving subject and tripod. Being at ground level, and with a turtle that kept moving slightly, as well as handheld, I had to keep about a foot in front of it while trying to keep in focus. I probably took 50 shots of this to have this one as the sharpest one. Those factors, along with telling turtle jokes to try to get it to smile, made this a more difficult shot than it appears! :)

Great shot of a beautiful creature.
What are the original dimensions of what we see here? I'm asking 'cause of the macro shot mentioned in other comments.

Yeah, a turtle! Great shot, Gary. Great sharpness, colour, and of course, subject matter. ;)

The turtle was a small painted turtle, probably 4" in diameter. The face shown here was no larger than an inch across, probably a bit smaller.

I agree with Patrick's comments. I like the colours and the 'natural frame' of this picture.

Nice closeup and detail. I don't mind the vegetation but ideally both eyes would be in focus.
