Description

This photo is the result of ignoring most advise about shooting IR with the sun behind you. I decided to try capturing the early morning sunrise on the Rock River in Newfane, Vermont by shooting into the sun. IR shots being somewhat surreal in general I really don't mind the few negative points such as the blown out sunlit sky and of course the surreal colors. Probably just my opinion though....

It is a good experiment. I like the sky how it turned out!
Agree about the grainy aspect, but its ok.
Some trees are blurry but it because of the wind... i gues.
What would i do: I would cut just above the cropped rock in the left side.
A good shot!

Very creative. Love the colors. It seems tilted to the right.

Keep experimenting but this is not top quality for IR imo.

Why?

  • Blurry tree branches.
  • Pebbles in lower right section are to dark (lacking details).
  • Agree with Michelle on the composition being tilted.
  • Blown out section of sky at the "tilted" bridge stump.
You can do WAY better... ;)

I will disagree about the tilt comments. This is a very mountainous terrain and the river is flowing downward from the bottom of the frame to the top. The bridge can be judged by the vertical guardrails not from the perspective of being well below it as the road is sloping sharply downhill. I shot this obviously with a tripod with multiple bubble levels and the camera was perfectly level.
As for the dark lower right, I chose that presentation and could easily have brought out the details. I tend to like the high contrast effects in an image and use them frequently. Just my taste and I can understand your point.
Patrick, you are always the master technician! :) We sometimes approach an image differently. I agree with your points but differ in their impact on the overall effect. :)
Thanks as always for the comments though!!

Great capture; The composition and colors here are excellent. It's great that you're experimenting as well and not following the 'rules', I think that will help you grow as an artist and a photographer. Top marks.

Nice cold colors, interesting shot :)
I'm not a big fan of a bit green-yellow tones of the sky. For me the shot could be all in cold tones, but it's only my taste ;)
I like the lower part of the picture - structure of stones contrasted with calm water :)

I'm looking at the trees at the far shore Gary. The ones just to the left of the bridge. They are what caught my eye as being tilted. It's no biggie. I'm kinda liking lavender trees. I want some in my yard!

The details on the rocks are great.
